LOANED TO ONE ANOTHER
AN ANCIENT AZTEC PRAYER
Interfaith Harmony Week Day 2
Oh, only for so short a while you have loaned us to each other,
because we take form in your act of drawing us.
And we take life in your painting us,
and we breathe in your singing us.
But only for so short a while have you loaned us to each other.
And we take life in your painting us,
and we breathe in your singing us.
But only for so short a while have you loaned us to each other.
The Aztecs were a Mesoamerican culture of central Mexico from 1300 to 1521. Deep in the mythology of the Aztecs is the idea of self-sacrificing deities. What we call “creation” results from the deities offering themselves for the sake of everything coming into being.
Another powerful insight helps us to see old endings as new beginnings. After the suns have burned for whatever their time might be, a new age is born. Some have thought our contemporary time is located between two ages, two suns, since in our time we are experiencing upheaval and conflict to an intense degree. Perhaps, we are on the verge of a new age, a new sun is beginning to shine.
Reflection/Practice
During this time of conflict and upheaval, we remember those suffering estrangements.
Sometimes even friends have become enemies.
Members in a family are separated from each other.
It is time to “end this uncivil war.”
It is time to begin anew.
The ancient Aztec Prayer states “you have loaned us to each other.”
Who has been loaned to you?
Do you cherish this person?
How has this person blessed you?
How do you bless them?
Are you separated or alienated from anyone?
Hold them in your heart letting the light of your heart guide you.
Even separations do not need to be hostile or vindictive.
Seek to be the Sun at its rising, the beginning of a new age.
