The History of the Interfaith Peace Project 2001 to 2023
2001 – The Beginning – Carlow College in Pittsburgh, PA
After several months of discussions with Sr. Grace Ann Geibel, RSM, President of Carlow College, the Board of Directors approves the establishment of an Interfaith Center on the school’s campus. Thomas P. Bonacci, C.P., offered the proposal and project design after consulting with the local Interfaith Community. Sister Barbara Finch, CSJ, becomes the Co-Director and develops Social Justice outreach and relationships with the greater Pittsburgh Community.
Mission Statement – The Interfaith Project at Carlow College
The Interfaith Project at Carlow College is a humble, yet important step, in helping our world find peace in the midst of conflict and division. Our special contribution is to provide a place of prayer, study, and reflection where peoples of all faiths and goodwill can find respect and support as they seek what is good, true and holy. We will seize every opportunity to pray for peace as we strive for justice, to seek what is true, to honor what is good, as we celebrate what is holy in solidarity with all peoples throughout the world.

The Circle of Wisdom -Women from various faith traditions engaging in fruitful conversation concerning the ongoing development of The Interfaith Project.
The Circle of Friends –A gathering of those engaged in Interfaith work and practice from throughout the local community.
The Circles of Justice and Peace –People dedicated to making peace by advocating for justice in every aspect of human life.
The Circle of Service –Volunteers who dedicate themselves to a particular project for the development and well-being of The Interfaith Project.
The Circle of Artists –A community of artists who consulted with us in the design and development of the Interfaith Sanctuary and work.
2002
The Carlow Interfaith Center participates in The Daughters and Sons of Abraham outreach promoting mutuality, respect, and understanding between the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian communities in the Greater Pittsburgh Area.
Representatives from the Interfaith Center attend and participate in the monthly Jewish-Christian Dialogue sponsored by the American Jewish Committee.
Shepherd’s Heart, an outreach program to the houseless community, gathers weekly at the Carlow Interfaith Center.
Under the direction of Sr. Barbara Finch, CSJ, the houseless and those suffering from poverty have priority status in all the affairs of the Interfaith Center.
Thomas P. Bonacci, C.P. initiates the Circle of Wisdom, a gathering of women spiritual leaders who will guide and direct the Interfaith outreach.
The Circles of Friends, an ongoing conversation of people from diverse interfaith communities, frequently comes together to influence the work of the Interfaith Center and outreach.
The Fifth Avenue Conversation begins a monthly meeting of civic, business, and political leaders to engage the wisdom and courage of our friends who live in the streets.
The Gathering of Interfaith Children begins as children from the Greater Pittsburgh Area visit the Interfaith Center to meet people from diverse Faith Traditions.
The Circle of Artists, under the direction of stain-glass specialist Nick Parrendo, frequently gathers at the Interfaith Center.
George D’Angelo, founder of the United Nations International Day of Peace Vigil, establishes an office of peace at the Interfaith Center.
The Honorable Thomas J. Murphy, Mayor of Pittsburgh, PA, declared the Carlow Interfaith Project to be a “Bridge” to bring diverse people together.

The Interfaith Project is formally announced to the Passionist Community at its Chapter meeting in Mt. Pocono, PA. Thomas M. Berry, C.P., an interfaith specialist, offers his support for the Project.

Sr. Grace Ann Geibel, RSM, meets with Bishop Donald Wuerl of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh to present the Interfaith Proposals. The Bishop offered his support and comments on the appropriateness of the Project in light of the events of September 11, 2001.

THE SECOND INCARNATION OF
THE INTERFAITH PROJECT

The second incarnation of the Interfaith Project happened at Crepevine on Church Street in San Francisco. Tom and I were sharing a meal, and I asked him the question, “Have you ever considered creating a nonprofit for the interfaith work you are doing?” He said that he had but that it was too complicated and he didn’t have time. I told him that I knew how to do it and could do the legwork. This was an important conversation.
Tom’s Interfaith Project at Carlow College had recently closed at the height of its work with people from all faiths and economic classes, from all ethnicities, and with particular emphasis on Women’s Voice. I had recently tried to start a nonprofit that would focus on breast cancer care for the underserved, but it collapsed. So, Tom and I came to the conversation at Crepevine, each in grief over our recent losses. But when I asked him the question, and he answered it, we were like Phoenix rising through the ashes.
With the help of our wonderful nonprofit attorney, Gene Takagi, IPP was born, originally with three board members: Tom, Pat, and me. I am so grateful that all of us have the opportunity to bless one another in our work together.
