Review and Updates on the Pauline Literature
October 2, 9, 16, and 23

November 13 – Report on the up-coming meeting of The Society of Biblical Literature

NOTE

The actual (supposed) sequence of these Letters is Second Thessalonians, Colossians, Ephesians, First and Second Timothy, and Titus.  The proposed arrangement is for the sake of presenting the logic of the Trinitarian, Christological, and Ecclesiological insights that will unfold in the “post-Pauline” period.  This order affords us the opportunity to appreciate the unfolding theology of the Cosmic Christ whether or not such an idea is authentically Pauline.

Thank you for this opportunity to journey with you,
Peace
Tom

The Passion of Jesus in our World Today
Insights from St. Matthew’s Gospel

February 2, 16, and March 2, 2023
The Passion and The Eucharistic Theology of Pope Francis
Matthew 26: 17-30

Pope Francis reminds us the beauty of our Liturgy is to be found in Jesus not in the cultural trappings of history no matter how endearing they might be.  The Bishop, when consecrating the Altar prays, “Here may the victims of oppression find true freedom.”  The Sanctuary, like the table of the Lord must be open to all in need of compassion, love, and transformation.  We will ponder the teachings of Pope Francis in light of his letter on the Liturgy, the Church’s Tradition, and the Biblical witness.

Triduum Retreat
Holy Week – April 6 – 9, 2023
Mercy Center Auburn

“I Have Greatly Desired to Celebrate this Passover With You” Luke 22:15

We take our title for this Retreat from the Apostolic Letter of Pope Francis on the Liturgy. Our Triduum observance will provide us an opportunity to review and ponder the significance of the Table of Jesus in our lives as his disciples.

The service Jesus renders on Holy Thursday is the model of our own care for one another. The giving of Jesus on the Cross is the source of life in the Spirit. The resurrection of Jesus from the dead empowers us to be his risen love in the here and now of life.

Prayer, study, contemplation, and quiet will bless us as our retreat unfolds.

The Passion of Jesus in our World Today
Insights from St. Matthew’s Gospel

April 20, May 4, and May 18, 2023
The Passion, Death, and Resurrection
According to St. Matthew’s Gospel
Matthew 26-27

We will consider passages unique to St. Matthew’s rendition of the Passion and Death of Jesus.  We will also consider some details in the more traditional material giving insight into Matthew’s purpose in rewriting the Passion Narrative.  Matthew presents Jesus as the “fulfillment” of the Law.  We must understand this not in terms of eliminating the Law but observing it in such a way as to reveal God’s compassionate love for all peoples.  Traditionally the Passion and Death of Jesus portray dynamic aspects of the Resurrection of the Lord.  We will review the Good Friday Liturgy to glean hints into the nature of the death of Jesus as an act of self-giving love for everyone.

The Passion of Mary Magdalene
The Passions of Her Legendary Life
Matthew 27: 61

Our study and presentation will survey the myths and legends concerning the Beloved figure of Mary Magdalene.  All four Gospels testify to the essential witness of Mary Magdalene.  The Church’s Tradition develops this witness in ways creative, challenging, and oftentimes controversial.  Grounded in the Biblical Traditions, Mary Magdalene flourishes in the Liturgical Traditions, captivates in the many devotions to her, and speaks to us anew in the myths and legends celebrating her courage, strength, and nobility.
