The Gospel of St. Mark
Part One – Mark 1:1 – 8:26
Following After Jesus
The Gospel of Mark has been rediscovered by the Contemporary Church. Once thought to be a condensed rendition of Matthew’s gospel. Mark now stands as a prime source of Luke and Matthew. The relevancy of this foundational Gospel to the contemporary situation of the World cannot be denied. Our detailed study attempts to follow in the footsteps of Jesus who dramatically confronted the Imperial powers and their allies with the proclamation and unmasking of the “kin-dom” of God.

GLOBAL SOCIAL FRIENDSHIP
FOUR MONDAY EVENINGS ON ZOOM
7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
“Social love” makes it possible to advance towards a civilization of love, to which all of us can feel called. Charity, with its impulse to universality, is capable of building a new world. No mere sentiment, it is the best means of discovering effective paths of development for everyone. Social love is a “force capable of inspiring new ways of approaching the problems of today’s world, of profoundly renewing structures, social organizations and legal systems from within”.

In observance of the Three Hundredth Anniversary of the Founding of the Passionist Community, we offer these humble reflections throughout the year. Our inspiration comes from the Gospel of St. Mark as we glean wisdom from the Hebrew Scripture, the New Testament, the Wisdom of St. Paul of the Cross, and contemporary Church Documentation. Detailed notes will be provided.
Saint Paul of the Cross gathered companions to live together and proclaim the Gospel of Christ to all.
The first name he gave his community was “The Poor of Jesus.” This was to indicate that their lives were to be based on evangelical poverty, which he held to be so necessary if they were to observe the other evangelical councils, to persevere in prayer, and to preach the Word of the Cross in season and out of season.
Moreover, he wanted them to live lives like apostles. They were to foster and develop a deep spirit of prayer, penance, and solitude so that they could reach closer union with God and witness to God’s love.
Keenly aware of the evils that afflicted the people of his time, he never tired of insisting that the most effective remedy is the Passion of Jesus, “the greatest and most overwhelming work of God’s love.”
The Rule of the Passionist Community #1
PART ONE – THE WINTER SERIES
We Passionists make the Paschal Mystery the center of our lives.
This entails a loving commitment to follow Jesus Crucified, and a generous resolve to proclaim His Passion and death with faith and love. His Passion and death are no mere historical events. They are ever-present realities to people in the world of today, crucified as they are by injustice, by the lack of a deep respect for human life, and by a hungry yearning for peace, truth, and the fullness of human existence.

Happy is that person who, clothed with Jesus Christ and totally penetrated by his holy wounds, is entirely immersed and hidden in the immense sea of divine charity and there, detached from every created thing, rests in the bosom of the beloved Good! THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME
A REFLECTIVE MEDITATION ON LUKE 4: 14-30
As Jesus reads from the Book of Isaiah, he experiences the extraordinary out-pouring of the Spirit of God. Our reflective meditation will join Jesus in the Synagogue at Nazareth. This text, somewhat unique to the Gospel of Luke, reveals the nature of discipleship and the potential of the contemplative life to revolutionize the World. As Jesus unrolls the Scroll, we will experience the unfolding of God’s Word in our hearts.

REFLECTIONS ON MARY MAGDALENE
She is the Rising Image and Likeness of Savior Jesus
Every year The Institute for the Study of the Passion offers reflections on the Apostle to the Apostles. Our series explores Mary Magdalene’s faithful following of Jesus from Galilee to Tomb and Resurrection. The Liturgical Feast of Mary Magdalene provides the guide for our exploration of her faithful witness. Mary Magdalene continues to be honored by disciples of Jesus from all over the World. Her popularity gives us hope and courage as we face the issues of heartbreak, rejection, and violence in our own time. She is the Disciple of Easter and the exemplar of what it means to be disciple.

AN ON-GOING STUDY IN THE AUTHENTIC LETTERS OF ST. PAUL
This on-going study in the authentic Letters of St. Paul from the viewpoint of the people of Paul’s time. Such a perspective, of course, requires humility and openness. It is always difficult to reconstruct past history. The pursuit, however, is worth the effort. This series will serve as an introduction to the mind, heart, and soul of St. Paul.

2021 Theme: Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world: Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. In 2021, as we heal from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are inspired to think creatively and collectively about how to help everyone recover better, how to build resilience, and how to transform our world into one that is more equal, more just, equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and healthier.

A Day of Spirituality for People in Recovery
ONLINE SESSION
Christ the King Passionist Retreat Center
SERENITY IN THE TIME OF UNCERTAINTY
Friday, September 24, 2021
10:30 am – 2:00 pm
Led by Fr. Tom Bonacci, CP
Fee: $35
Almost everywhere we look, we are tempted to think and believe there is nothing but bad news. Sobriety does not change the weather or the forces of Nature. What changes is our ability and willingness to be people who take care of ourselves so other people might be helped, cared for, and respected. For too long, we may have thought our limitations were failures. We may have been so self-centered we forgot to be self-giving. Our Day of Spirituality will revisit the Serenity Prayer.

THE WOMAN FROM NAZARETH
FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
DAY OF RETREAT
December 8, 2021
9:30 am – 4:00 pm
San Damiano Retreat Center
Danville, CA
By Thomas P. Bonacci, C.P.
Our day of retreat and reflection is inspired by Mary, the Mother of Jesus. On this day when we gather to celebrate and observe the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, we pause for prayer, study, reflection, and Liturgy to ponder the splendor of the Woman who gave birth to Jesus. We will explore the primary Scriptures concerning Mary in the New Testament. We will also explore the implications of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council concerning Mary. Since the Council’s profound insights, Mary has been declared to be “The First of Christians” and “The Mother of the Church.” She is for us the example of what it means to be a faithful disciple of Jesus.

SOBRIETY DURING THE HOLIDAYS
EVERY MOMENT IS A FRESH BEGINNING –T.S. Eliot
Our time together will gift us with the presence and wisdom of one another. Our Community of people, practicing the principles of sobriety, gives us strength, wisdom, and courage. Not only a few have experienced the presence of the Higher Power in the most difficult moments of life. The Winter holidays typically center around the imagery of light. Light shines in the darkness as an opportunity for new life and a new day. Our gentle day of reflection will provide an opportunity to pause from the tensions of life, ponder the Wisdom of our 12 Step Program, and honestly share with one another for support and encouragement.
Our Speaker Thomas P. Bonacci, C.P. will share his reflections as we come together to share our wisdom, reflections, and experiences on this Day of Spirituality for People in Recovery.
