Diocese of Reno Annual Conference: "Blessed and Grateful"

DIOCESE OF RENO
ANNUAL CONFERENCE

“BLESSED AND GRATEFUL”

Since 1983 the Diocese of Reno has held an Annual Diocesan Conference offering rich Catholic content
to support our faith journey and to strengthen our experience of community. Five of our Bishops, past and present, have endorsed and utilized this event as a warm and enriching gathering for the spiritual life and growth of our people. National speakers are invited to share on all themes. Topics range from prayer and spirituality, liturgy and worship, focus on parish leadership and interfaith issues, to deep questions of current events impacting Catholics in relevant ethical dialogues. Young adult sessions as well as a teen event partner with the Conference each year. This is an event which gathers us together as the Body of Christ!

PROGRAMS BY THOMAS P. BONACCI, C.P.

V-01

Blessed Are You, O God Father

The “blessedness” of God speaks to the fundamental attitude by which we are called to live our lives.
We are, in a word, called to live lives of gratitude. Every human person and every aspect of the
created order is a powerful expression of the blessedness of God in whom we live and move and
have our very being. We reflect the blessedness of God in who we are and what we do. Following
the Eucharistic impulse of the Church, we call upon God to bless the bread we hope to become.

V-02

Gifted, Chosen, Called

We will explore the Biblical idea of what it means to be a “chosen” people, a “gifted” community, a person “called” by God. No good gift is ever given for the sake of the self alone. St. Paul follows the impulse of the Hebrew Scriptures and the Prophets in the powerful teaching found in I Corinthians 13-14. We will savor thewords of the Apostle as we seek to become more and more generous in offering the gift of ourselves to those around us.

THE JOY OF DIVERSITY
In Honor of Christian Unity Week

Our program will explore the diversity of the faith traditions of Humankind.  There was a time, not long ago, when the diversity of faith expressions caused consternation, upset, and rejection.  People were condemned because their faith stance was different from what others believed to be true.  We have come a long way since the dawn of Ecumenism and Interfaith Spirituality.  Using St. Paul’s metaphor of “many parts in the one body,” we will suggest the diversity of faith expressions can be a cause for joy.  As each and every human person must be true to themselves if they would be people of integrity, so every faith tradition must be true to its highest principles if it would truly contribute to the upbuilding of the World.  How blessed our World would be if we could rejoice in the unique gifts we each bring to the table of life.

THREE QUESTIOONS FOR REFLECTION

  1. Have you ever visited the worship site of a Community other than your own?If so, describe your experience?

  1. As you think of the various expressions of faith in the World, what brings you joy?

  1. If you did not belong to your current faith tradition, what community of faith might you join? Explain in a loving and reflective way.

IT WAS LIKE FIRE BURNING WITHIN US

Our on-going reflections on the Gospel of St. Luke are open to anyone who would like to savor the details of the narrative in a prayerful, contemplative, and justice seeking manner.  It is not necessary to attend each session.  The individual presentations are designed to stand alone.  Notes and translations will be provided for each session.  Our text of choice is the New Revised Standard.  We will explore the Gospel of Luke as a New Testament document with attentiveness to historical sources and cultural developments which might have influenced Luke’s understanding ad presentation of the gospel of God revealed in the person and work of Jesus of Nazareth.  Luke portrays Jesus as a Galilean prophet motivated by the out-pouring of God’s Holy Spirit.  This Spirit, according to Luke, influenced the communities of Jesus followers then and, by implication, now.
