Elijah Cummings
January 18, 1951 – October 17, 2019
“We must also stop the hateful incendiary comments, we got to do it. Those in the highest levels of the government must stop invoking fear, using racist language and encouraging reprehensible behavior. It only creates more division among us and severely limits our ability to work together for the common good. As a country, we finally must say enough is enough. That we are done with the hateful rhetoric. That we are done with the mass shootings. That we are done with white supremacists, domestic terrorist, who terrorizing in our country and fighting against everything America stands for.”
– Elijah Cummings
Elijah Cummings was a member of the United States House of Representatives. He was first sworn in as a Representative in 1996. He became ranking member of the Oversight Committee in 2011 and Chairman in 2019.
He was elected to represent Maryland’s 7th Congressional District. Before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Cummings served in the Maryland House of Delegates for fourteen years. He was the first African American in Maryland history to be named Speaker Pro Tempore.
Throughout his career, Elijah Cummings battled fiercely to protect voter rights and sought to address the needs of people of color.through enacting and strengthening civil rights protections. Cummings argued the right to vote was the foundation of all other rights.
Below are the lyrics as I heard them.
Now the Time Has Come
People heard that
only love conquers hate.
Will we see the light
before it’s too late.
Skies are getting dark,
Tears of sorrow falling.
Listen to the voice,
you will hear it calling.
Now the Time Has Come.
Time has come for everyone
To lay down all your arms
Let the light of love shine on and on.
You have to give a little
or you can give a lot.
Let them know that
they’re not forgot.
Let’s open up our hearts
May all the violence cease.
Let’s all come together
On this day of peace.
If we are one for all,
and all for one,
then there is only love,
So send love.
We are living in a world
that is constantly created.
So it lies within us all,
the children they are waiting.
Now the Time Has Come.
Time has come for everyone.
To lay down all your love.
Live a life of peace and love.
We can make this world
a better place.
Love for all mankind
that’s the only way.
Take away the homelessness,
take away the dreams.
Give them shelter,
Take them off the streets
We all know its time.
Now the time has come…
