THE GOSPEL OF ST. JOHN

A Survey of St. John 1-12 / Some Interfaith Reflections

Four Fridays from 10:30 am until 12 Noon

Thomas P. Bonacci, C.P.

Our four part series will survey the Gospel of St. John exploring the richness of this Gospel as an example and model of how we might engage the complex World in which we live.   We will be inspired by Jesus, the Word made flesh, who will shepherd us in the ways of Wisdom.  We will explore the interconnectedness of St. John’s Gospel to the Faith Traditions of humankind.

FEBRUARY 9, 2018 – THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH AND DWELT AMONG US (John 1)

We will explore the basic outline of the Gospel of St. John paying close attention as to how this Gospel unfolds in the life and worship of the Church.

MARCH 9, 2018 – FROM CANA TO CANA (John 2-3-4))

The Wedding Feast at Cana, the Temple incident in Jerusalem, the encounter with the Samaritan Women, and, finally, the Cure of the Official Son / Slave all occur as Jesus travels from “Cana to Can.”  The full range of the work of the “word made Flesh” unfolds  as we journey with Jesus.

APRIL 20, 2018 – THE CONFLICTS OVER GIVING SIGHT TO THE BLIND (John 9)

Following a note on John 5 we will explore this wonderful and transformative narrative which celebrates the courage of the blind man who can “now see” not only with his eyes but his heart.  Even as he suffers rejection, our newly sighted friend seeks to follow after Jesus no matter what the consequences.

MAY 18, 2018 – THE UNTYING OF LAZARUS (John 11)

In a most ironic twist, those threatened by the new life Jesus gives want Jesus destroyed!  This episode basically concludes the first part of St. John’s Gospel giving us pause to explore the consequences and blessings of following after Jesus in all we say and do.
