The Passion, Death, and Resurrection
According to St. Matthew’s Gospel
Matthew 26-27

We will consider passages unique to St. Matthew’s rendition of the Passion and Death of Jesus.  We will also consider some details in the more traditional material giving insight into Matthew’s purpose in rewriting the Passion Narrative.  Matthew presents Jesus as the “fulfillment” of the Law.  We must understand this not in terms of eliminating the Law but observing it in such a way as to reveal God’s compassionate love for all peoples.  Traditionally the Passion and Death of Jesus portray dynamic aspects of the Resurrection of the Lord.  We will review the Good Friday Liturgy to glean hints into the nature of the death of Jesus as an act of self-giving love for everyone.
