Earth Day 2020

Today is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day! Earth Day was first recognized on April 22, 1970. On that day 20 million Americans “took to the streets, college campuses and hundreds of cities to protest environmental ignorance and demand a new way forward for our planet.” (earthday.org)

Earth day resulted in the passage of environmental laws in the United States. Among the laws passed were The Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was also created. Earth Day 2016 was also chosen as the day for signing the Paris Agreement on climate change.
