CHAOS

We live, as they say, in turbulent and uncertain times.  The number one issue is the price of gasoline and the cost of living. Upon deeper reflection, the issue might be something else. It might have something to do with the desire to secure for our children a better world where self-worth is not measured by personal wealth, and well-being is not the result of who you know to get ahead.

Human persons flourish when they feel respected, heard, and empowered. The greed and lust for power and attention so prevalent in the highest offices of power cause chaos to reign supreme. The ability to insult and hurt others becomes a way of life no decent person wants for their children. Violence replaces diplomacy, lies alter truth, and greed becomes a virtue. A steady diet of this chaos drags everyone down, often to the brink of despair, powerlessness, and hopelessness.

Is there a way to cope with all this?

First, never let go of your dream for a better world. Hope springs eternal when hope is never compromised. The violence of the words and deeds ripping at our world today reveals just how necessary it is to have hope, committing ourselves to what is right and just.

Second, be inspired by those who are on the front lines of resistance. Seek to know the passions of their hearts and souls. Be well nourished by inspiring and dedicated people who pursue what is good and loving with remarkable courage.

Third, do not let the chaos around you become your self-understanding. In many faith traditions, God creates out of chaos. This reveals our essential nature as creators even in times of setback and disappointment.

Fourth, be true to your deepest dreams, your greatest longings, and honest hopes for self and others in the ordinary affairs of life. Share your feelings at a gas pump, grocery store, or waiting room. Commiserate with the struggles of others, and lovingly share your hopes and dreams with them. They will prove to be an inspiration to you.

Finally, bless the children – all the children everywhere and all the time. They deserve better than what the world now offers them. Listen to the children and learn from their wisdom, even as you seek to secure and support them. Children often exhibit a resilience and strength we too often forget or neglect.

Blessings to you, Beloved Community, for your courage to dream and bless the world with your hope. Cherish the children. They deserve all the love and care we can give them.
