THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE
SEPTEMBER 21st
The International Day of Peace is observed every year on September 21st. The Interfaith Peace Project strives to observe The International Day of Peace every day. Peace, as a way of life, is an affair of the heart. The more one is at peace with themselves, the more one can share their peace with others.
September 21st is a marker in the calendar year, inviting us to consider the importance of peace in our lives as individuals and communities. Once peace is broken, injustice follows, wars loom large, and chaos ensues. There is a sense of inner instability as the public order is threatened.
It has been wisely said, “If you want peace, work for justice.” Justice ensures the human rights and dignity of every person.
In some spiritual traditions, the virtues, like justice, are informed by love. Justice is a deep expression of love for those who suffer injustice and indignity. The Hebrew Prophet Micah heard God saying, “Act justly, love faithfully, and walk humbly with your God.”
Over the years, we at The Interfaith Peace Project have discovered another perspective – “If you want justice, discover your peace.” Close to the heart of interfaith love, understanding, and cooperation is the practice of a peaceful heart. Deep within our hearts lies an oasis of peace and serenity. From this reservoir of insight flows the life-giving waters of justice, repair, restoration, health, and transformation.
The great song says, “Peace is flowing like a river, flowing out of you and me.” Being at peace is natural. Injustice is an aberration disturbing the inner peace of our hearts and society. Peace enables and enhances our human nature. Injustice, conflict, and war deface the heart, tempting us to believe that might is right.
As we observe The International Day of Peace, claim the peace that is in your heart. Let your every step be peaceful, your every word a blessing, and every deed an act of love.
If you want justice,
discover anew your peaceful heart.
