On Us a Light Has Arisen!

We will reflect on and study Matthew 4: 12-17. Jesus has been formed by the powers of Heaven and Earth in his birth, exile, baptism, temptation, and ascension into Galilee. These verses are unique to Matthew as they define the person and work of Jesus who comes into Galilee as “light shinning in the darkness,” to use a verse from St. John. Conditions in Galilee were oppressive as Jesus rises to the occasion to confront the powers of greed, corruption, and expediency. His work provides the model for how we might be light in our own time, place, and situation.

You are the light of the World!

Matthew presents Jesus as the Light of God’s presence dawning on the inhabitants of Galilee. The deeds of compassion and his words of justice challenge those who dwell in the darkness of injustice to see the light of a new day. This reflection, based on Matthew 5: 13-16 challenges faithful disciples to be true to themselves. The light within them is destined to bless all those who suffer injustice and rejection. These two presentations are independent from one another. The notes of each session will be distributed to all in each session.

The Book of Revelation (The Apocalypse) sets the standard for the liturgical praise of God as Cosmic event with Global implications.  In the midst of conflict and division, the Seer of Revelation experiences the peaceful dominion of God in a time of Imperial wrath.  Often feared for its violence and harsh imagery, the Book of Revelation is ultimately a Book of Comfort rallying the Community of Disciples to follow the Lamb whose death is our life.  We are called to stand for what is right and just in the midst of oppression and fear.  Revelation is our definitive invitation to the wedding of the Lamb who comes to marry us in the fullness of time.  This is a Book of Prayer, Praise, Comfort, and Vision.

WHAT I HAVE DONE SO YOU SHOULD DO!

Jesus challenged his disciples to be the expression and reality of his self-giving love and compassion.  To show forth the strength of what it means to be a fully alive human person, Jesus washed their feet.  This scene from St. John’s Gospel, introduces our survey of St. Matthew’s Gospel.  More than any other Gospel, Matthew explores “the Will of the Father” as the guiding light of the life of Jesus.  Jesus is God’s plan for us.  Through prayer, study, reflection, and honest sharing will we accept the challenge of Jesus to be our best selves no matter what the circumstances of life.

REFLECTIONS ON THE APOSTLE TO THE APOSTLES

In light of the Vatican Document of June 10, 2016, the Liturgical memory of Mary Magdalene was elevated from a Memorial to a proper Feast.  Declared to be “The Apostle to the Apostles”, Mary Magdalene provides the example for the faithful proclamation of the Gospel to the World.  She still stands before the tombs of the slain, the cages of the oppressed, and prisons of the strangers with the tears of her love for Christ.  The example of Mary Magdalene sets the standard for children, women, and men who desire to proclaim Christ in Word and deed.  Our sources for reflections will be the liturgical texts and prayers of her Feast Day, the Gospel of John, and the ancient witness of the Church.

Passion: Matthew’s Gospel

 

The Passion motif in the Gospel of Matthew extends throughout the Gospel narrative itself. We will explore three crucial texts to underscore this insight: Matthew 2:16-18 – the slaughter of the Innocents; Matthew 8:14-17 – the Cure of Simon Peter’s Mother-in-law; and Matthew 27:19 – the distress of Pilate’s wife. The Passion of Jesus is, at one and the same time, solidarity with the afflicted and the call for that justice by which the Kingdom of God is realized on Earth in the here and now of our lives. (two two-hour sessions)

              The great Faith, Spiritual/Traditions/Wisdom Traditions of humankind have powerful Worldviews by which they understand the meaning of Life and the human responsibility to live lives consistent with what we now call “The Care of the Earth” and our human responsibility to one another as human persons.  Tonight, we gather to explore some vital aspects of these teachings and understandings as reflected in the diverse Traditions of humankind.  We propose several questions for our consideration: 

• How does your Tradition understand the Nature Order of Creation? Does your Tradition see a significant difference between the natural and the supernatural? 

• How do you understand the natural order of the World? Do you have a perspective that enhances or challenges your Tradition?  Please share some detailed insights. 

• Does your Tradition have teachings about Creation? What would you consider to be the most important aspects of those Teachings?  

• Do the discoveries from Modern Science influence your understanding of your Tradition’s Teachings concerning Creation and the Natural World? Please provide some detailed insights. 

• What is your understanding of “Environmental Spirituality”? Does your Tradition provide any perspectives on environmental concerns?  If so, what are some of the more important aspects you would like to share with us?  Are you influenced by evolutionary approaches?  If so, how?

Our five-part series will explore the second volume of St. Luke’s two volume work known as “The Gospel of St. Luke” and “The Acts of the Apostles.”  We will read The Acts of the Apostles as the continuation of the story of Jesus in the time of the Apostles featured in St. Luke’s second work.

St. Luke confronts the issue of the return of Jesus by presenting the out-pouring of the Spirit on the Community of the Church as the focal point of his work.  This Community spreads and grows under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.  Our series will focus on the work of the Spirit in the ancient Church that we might discern the workings of the Spirit in our own time.   

Please note all presentation are independent.  It is not necessary to attend the previous session to attend the current presentation.  Notes and study guides will be provided.

Aliveness

The World Scriptures, at the time of Buddha, pondered the nature of the “self”. The question focused on what it meant to be an individual. In fact, the various religious traditions and philosophies of humankind centered on this most important issue. As the ages unfolded, the question was stated this way: “What is the purpose of my life?” There is perhaps no greater question for a human being to ask. Today we may reframe the question: “What does it mean for me to be alive?” “Aliveness” is that sense of consciousness by which we not only discover what it is to be a “self” but what it means to be a child of all that is for the sake of all that is. Let’s spend a few moments exploring what it means to be fully aware, fully engaged, and fully alive.

Our series is inspired by the work and life of Mr. Rogers.  His outreach to children in times of trouble and heartbreak has helped thousands of children cope with the harsh realities of life.  Mr. Rogers worked in the medium of television challenging the steady diet of violence that he believed poisoned the lives of real kids.  An ordained Presbyterian minister, Mr. Rogers set the standard for Gospel proclamation that evangelized through justice and kindness.  Our four part series will explore the Gospel of Matthew through the lens of the kindness that makes justice.

Participants are encouraged to arrange pictures of deceased Loved Ones, candles, artifacts, etc. to establish a Memorial Altar near their computer.  We will pause before we begin our time together to “Remember!”

10:45 am          Reflection

John 19: 25-27 serves as the basis for our reflections today.  We have, in these verses, a “window” into the heart of Jesus who ensures his mother and Beloved Disciple are cared for in the time after his passing over to God.  This scene is as beautiful and touching as it is painful and tender.  Perhaps we can identify with the feelings and emotions portrayed and implied in this most powerful text.

We are a Nation in grief.  The catastrophic effects of the pandemic creates a heart-breaking environment for anyone especially those already coping with grief.  Probing even more deeply in John 19: 25-27, we will discern some insights into how we might cope with the ambiguity of the present moment.

Our four-day retreat will ponder, celebrate, and explore a survey of “Beloved Scriptures” and “Sacred Narratives.”   After surveying the wonderful idea that the Holy Spirit is at work in everyone everywhere and all the time, we have a basis for sensing the Spirit’s inspiration in the sacred literature and narratives of humankind.  Narratives and writings, songs and stories that come from any Tradition belong by their nature to the human race.  Our survey will provide inspiration for prayer, study, and the profound quiet that blesses and transforms the heart.  We will also relate each of these stories to the experience of Jesus as reflected in the Holy Scriptures and Traditions of Judaism and Christianity.

Faith, Hope and Harmony

A reflection on John 14:23

Jesus replied: Anyone who loves me will keep my word,
and my Father will love him,
and we shall come to him and make a home in him.

The three theological virtues are the backbone of our spirituality as disciples of Jesus.  The virtue of charity is the harmony of the Holy Spirit living deep within us.  Moved by the Spirit, we faithfully follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Inspired by the spirit, we become the Hope of Jesus as we feed the hungry, cherish the poor, and welcome the stranger.  Our lives are meant to be in harmony with God’s love for everyone.

Reflection Questions: 

1. How has the Holy Sprit moved in your life?
2. What does it mean for you to live in the Harmony of Love for others?
