JESUS HAD TO PASS THROUGH SAMARIA
REFLECTIONS INSPIRED BY ST. JOHN 4: 4-42
Thomas P. Bonacci, C.P.

The narrative of the Samaritan Woman is more than an endearing story of mutual care and love.  It is a transformative story of what happens when two souls are so radically open to one another that an entire village is enlightened and empowered.  This is not simply a narrative of how Jesus blessed a battered and rejected woman.  It is a revelation of God’s Grace as a mutual experience.  As the Woman of Samaria plunges the bucket of her heart into the waters of his heart, Jesus experiences the surge of the Divine pulsing through every fiber of his being.  He comes to a deeper awareness of his own identity as he journeys to the village of strangers who proclaim him to all the World.

This episode from the Fourth Gospel provides a roadmap for our own journey by which our souls will be centered in the One who loves us beyond our wildest imagination.  Together we will journey to the watering hole of God’s love lowering the bucket of our hearts into the life-giving and transformative waters of God’s all-pervasive Spirit.
