THE GOSPEL OF ST. JOHN
A Survey of St. John 1-12
Six Fridays from 10:30 am until 12 Noon
Thomas P. Bonacci, C.P.

Our six part series will survey the Gospel of St. John exploring the richness of this Gospel as an example and model of how we might engage the complex World in which we live.   We will be inspired by Jesus, the Word made flesh, who will shepherd us in the ways of Wisdom.

JULY 14, 2017 – THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH AND DWELT AMONG US (John 1)

We will explore the basic outline of the Gospel of St. John paying close attention as to how this Gospel unfolds in the life and worship of the Church.

AUGUST 4, 2017 – THE TEMPLE INCIDENT (John 2)

The “Palm Sunday” event occurs in the John Chapter Two setting the stage for the inevitable conflict that runs through this Gospel.  Here we see Jesus as the exemplar of the courage that is necessary in the proclamation and living out of the Gospel.

SEPTEMBER 8, 2017 – THE DIALOGUE WITH THE SAMARITAN WOMAN (John 4)

This masterful dialogue reveals the depths not only of the sacramental life but how we might engage the “perfect stranger” as we proclaim the Gospel to all the World.  The empowerment and humility of the Samaritan Woman sets the standard for authentic disciples of Jesus.

OCTOBER 6, 2017 – I DO THE WORKS OF THE ONE WHO SENT ME (John 5)

As the crippled man walks for the first time in many years, Jesus reveals his identity as One who only does what he sees the Father doing.  These revealing words take place in the midst of conflict inviting us not to become “crippled” by the hardships and difficulties of life.

NOVEMBER 10, 2017 – THE CONFLICTS OVER GIVING SIGHT TO THE BLIND (John 9)

This wonderful and transformative narrative celebrates the courage of the blind man who can “now see” not only with his eyes but his heart.  Even as he suffers rejection, our newly sighted friend seeks to follow after Jesus no matter what the consequences.

DECEMBER 15, 2017 – THE UNTYING OF LAZARUS (John 11)

In a most ironic twist, those threatened by the new life Jesus gives want Jesus destroyed!  This episode basically concludes the first part of St. John’s Gospel giving us pause to explore the consequences and blessings of following after Jesus in all we say and do.
